GALLERY: Loftus packed to capacity for carols by candlelight

Apart from spreading festive cheer and giving back to the Jacaranda FM listeners, the event also raised plenty for their Good Morning Angels fund.

Thousands of people in and around the city flocked to Loftus Versfeld to attend the annual SPAR carols by candlelight event with Jacaranda FM on Tuesday evening.

“Tonight is special because not everyone has the privilege to get together and relish in the festive season,” Jacaranda FM presenter and local celebrity Elana Afrika-Bredenkamp said.

She said the event not only offered attendees a chance to get together to watch the Christmas carol performances for “free” but also gave them the opportunity to give back to those who were less fortunate.

“They aren’t just here for free, SPAR and Jacaranda FM made it possible for them to donate to a children’s home,” Afrika-Bredenkamp said.

The radio presenter added that it was a spectacular experience.

“There’s Christmas everywhere, no rowdiness,” she said.

Jacaranda FM executive director Kevin Fine said the event was aimed at giving back to their listeners.

“The idea is to provide a free concert for everyone to come out and enjoy.”

He added that the radio station’s whole line-up was in attendance along with some of the country’s best performers to entertain the crowd.

“It’s just to celebrate the festive season,” Fine said.

Apart from spreading festive cheer and giving back to the listeners, Fine said the event also raised plenty for their Good Morning Angels fund.

“We distribute the money every week during the course of the year and give it to a person in need and we also collect boxes of presents,” he explained.

Around 20 000 people attended the event but Fine said it was the annual event’s biggest turnout yet and went smoothly as it did not rain.
