VIDEO: New mall dazzles Moot consumers

A new shopping mall has opened in the Moot, much to the joy of local consumers.

The 11 000m Queenswood Quarter mall opened its doors for the first time to the public on Wednesday morning.

“It consists of a great tenant mix,” Ciska Watson of Dorpstraat and leasing agent said.

She said the new centre aimed to bring something to the area instead of replicating what was already there.

“We wanted to differentiate and compliment the node rather than duplicate what is in the area.”

Although there were numerous retailers in the centre, she said the was a “huge gap for proper retail” in the area.

“We are approximately 90% leased,” Watson said.

She said the remaining space was earmarked for differentiation stores such boutiques, bookshops or a florists

“We really want to create a quality tenant mix.”

Watson said the two shareholders, Dorpstraat and POD property fund, we’re proud to have made the development a reality.

“The community is very excited.”

Local resident Mari Steyn said she would definitely be shopping at the centre’s Checkers more often.

“I’m happy with the prices and I even got to meet the baker,” she said.

Another excited shopper, Liezel de Bruyn, said she was happy with the additional stores at the centre.

“Now I have options and it’ll be easier to get the best bargains,” she said.

The new shopping centre, however, was not all that was planned for the area – 25 old apartments were revamped.

“The old apartments were revamped to two-bedroom, one-bathroom loft apartments,” Watson said.

She said those interested in leasing could contact Apple property but would only be able to move in from January 2019.

Launch events around the centre were expected to carry on into the weekend.
