“Kudu lager, as majestic as the kudu itself, proves why it’s the leading beer style for the discerning South African market.”

Beer lovers were treated to an intimate craft beer tasting and dinner at the Manhattan Hotel in the Pretoria CBD on Saturday.

Beer fanatics had eight beers to taste from and were later given an opportunity to have two of their favourite beers with their dinner.

All beers are proudly brewed in South African and crafted differently, making every beer special.

“I am a beer drinker and I love trying out different beers,” said attendee Slyvester Ngoepe.

“The craft beer tasting was the place to be and I feel sorry for my friends who missed out.”

Candice de Wet, who took the tasters through the beers, said four of the eight craft beers were from Karoo Craft Breweries.

“Kudu lager, as majestic as the kudu itself, proves why it’s the leading beer style for the discerning South African market,” she said.

“The Jackal is sly as the jackal; the beer satisfies from the first sip and is not for the faint-hearted. While Oryx is distinctive as the oryx walking the dry, hot Karoo; while the Impala is a refreshingly fruity ale.”

Two other beers were from the Hoogerberg brewing, namely the Hoogerberg lager and the Hoogerberg Ystervark.

The lager has a medium- to low-malt aroma with “subtle hoppiness” while the ystervark is “crisp and dry to the taste with a light malty sweetness on the aroma the light hop flavours and bitterness gives the beer a great balance”.

The last two were from Quagga craft, which is the Quagga lager and pale ale.

“The lager is foamy with aromas of hops, fruits and a hint of herbs while the pale ale has tropical fruits, dried apricot and biscuits,” she said.

It is “hoppy yet lingers on the palate”.
