GALLERY: Fun galore at SPAR Women’s Race

This race has become an undeniable part of Pretoria’s road racing culture.

SuperSport Park was the place to be on Saturday afternoon as thousands of runners took part in the SPAR Women’s Race in Centurion.

The participants were full of energy, excitement and joy during the 5/10km race.

A total of 25 740 people took part in the 2018 SPAR Women’s Race, which included the young and the old, male and female.

Deputy Minister of Communications Pinki Kekana also completed the race.

“It was such a lovely race and it was great seeing a lot of men taking part. This is something that needs to be done regularly.”

She said it was important for women to keep fit.

“What a way to celebrate Women’s Month with this race and it was an honour to also be one of the participants,” said Kekana.

Another participant, Chanel Greyling, said it was her first time doing the race.

“I did a 10km today and I’m so exhausted. It was fun. I am, however, just disappointed that I completed the race in 1 hour two minutes. It’s still early in the season for me and hopefully, I can improve my time as I do more races.”

This unique race is distinguished from all other road races by the extraordinarily large number of participants, as well as the fact that it is the one event on the annual calendar where serious athletes are overwhelmed and by far surpassed in terms of numbers by thousands of once-off participants, mainly because of the charity supporting culture of the event.

However, this race has become an undeniable part of Pretoria’s road racing culture and hopefully all the participants were inspired to continue exercising for next year’s race.
