Manly weekend at Menlyn Maine

Families were front and centre at the Father’s Day celebrations at Central Square Menlyn Maine this weekend.

To celebrate Father’s day, shoppers at Central Square, Menlyn Maine were treated to live music at the piazza on Sunday, while children made handmade gifts for their fathers in the Dad’s arts-n-crafts workshop.

These memories were captured at the selfie stand, which also offered a chance of walking away with prizes for the best selfie.

Central Square’s restaurants pulled out all the stops. They offered special menus to celebrate the occasion, while shoppers having lunch at the glamorous Lindee-Lee Smith were treated to live music performances.

On display was the Father’s Day photographic exhibition by the Swedish embassy, which showcased the innovation and creativity of Swedish dads.

“The photo essay is done by photographer Johan Bävman, which portrays 25 fathers on parental leave and their views on the role of modern man,” said Swedish ambassador Cecilia Julin.

She also highlighted the benefits that fathers in Sweden get as part of so-called “parental leave”.

“Parents are given 480 days of leave per child,” she said.

“Four hundred and twenty of these days are paid at a rate of 80 percent of your salary up to a capped limited of 910 SEK a day.”

Sweden was the first country in the world to replace maternity leave with parental leave in 1974.

“The piazza, with its art and sculpture, relaxing spaces, fountains and buzzing alfresco restaurants, has become the heart of the new CBD of Pretoria.”
