Street braai fosters unity among Valhallians

The event brought residents together, giving them an opportunity to get to know each other well.

Valhalla residents were treated to a street braai on Friday evening in an effort for neighbours to learn to know each other better.

“Some of these people told me that they didn’t even know each other’s names – yet they are neighbours,” local councillor Ina Strijdom told Rekord.

“Events like this one show how much work we need to do in knowing each other better as neighbours.”

Residents could also meet their favourite radio deejay as Rian van Heerden and the Jacaranda FM Scenic Drive team broadcast live from the braai in Godiva Road.

Six such street braais have been held at various neighbourhoods in Pretoria this year.

Van Heerden said the initiative had proved immensely popular in bringing communities together.

The event was attracting more people as it grew “and the fun doubles with every braai”.

“We were astounded by how well a simple concept of braai-ing together, having a drink together and enjoying music can unite South Africans,” he said.

“The idea was to provide an opportunity for people to get together, to get to know their neighbours again. To create a sense of common cause and unity again. It’s something that was so part of the South African culture, but, for some reason, we haven’t been doing it for years. Now we’re having street braais again, coming together as South Africans – irrespective of background or heritage.”
