Bikers donate blankets to poor

“Our involvement in communities does create a good image and shows that we care.”

Thousands of blankets were on Sunday donated to needy children at Menlyn Park shopping centre.

Organiser and assistant director at Harley owners group Pieter De Koning said his 2 000 bikers donated between 3 500 and 4 000 blankets for the benefit of various charity organisations in the province.

He said the donation drive started in winter of 2006 when the group on a ride spotted a group of homeless people in Hillbrow, Johannesburg who had nothing.

“We were moved to start the blanket drive.”

De Koning said the drive and other charitable initiatives by the club had improved the image of bikers to the public.

“Our involvement in communities shows that we care,” he said.

De Koning said most of the club members were professionals and business owners.

“We are fortunate that we have something, so we try and help those who are less fortunate than us,” he said.

Biker Owen Mosala said he travelled from Midrand to be a part of the event.

“I am a father and I know how bad things are out there,” he said.

“This is my bit to help those who less fortunate than I am.”

Mosala brought his son Thuso along “so he would be a part of something good”.

“I want him to understand that we need each other in this world to thrive and become better communities,” he said.
