The South African Institute for Architects (SAIA) hosted the AZA 2018 architecture conference and exhibition at 012Central in the CBD this week.
The three-day conference started on Thursday and lasted until Saturday, under the theme “We the City: memory and resilience”.

The University of Pretoria and Tshwane University of Technology co-hosted the conference.
The AZA conference was launched in 2010 with the aim of creating a platform to share ideas while highlighting the role of design in economic and social endeavours.
“SAIA teams up with local universities where the best architects, students and up and coming architects are invited,” said UP department of architecture spokesperson Marguerite Pienaar.

The conference is held every second year around the country.
University of Brasília professor Maria Fernanda said she believes that the work of architectural professionals should participate in the social process of constructing cities.
The conference was attended by about 1 000 people, with 60 percent being students.
Some architects came from as far as Mexico, Chile and Cameroon.
