SCHOOL: Crawford chess player off to International olympiad

The avid chess player has scored a string of successes since she started playing chess.

A Crawford College Pretoria learner has been selected to participate in the Chess Olympiad in Georgia, in the US in September.

Kasmira Vather started playing chess at the age of nine in 2014 after Crawford Chess coach Eben Collin, spotted her talent.

The avid chess player has scored a string of successes since she started playing chess as a sport at school including:

– Common Wealth Chess Championships in New Delhi – 2015 (awarded SA National Colours for Chess)

– African Individual Top School Chess Championships in Botswana 2015: 2nd place Under 10 girls

– Women Candidate Master (WCM) title from the World Chess Federation (FIDE)

– African Youth Chess Championships (Zambia), December 2015: 3rd place Under 10 Girls in Africa

– SA Junior Chess Championships (SAJCC), April 2016: 1st place under 12 Girls

– SAJCC closed, April 2017: 2nd place

– SAJCC closed, April 2018: 2nd place under 14 girls

– Made the Under 16 World Youth Chess Olympiad in Turkey as part of the South African Chess team

– SA team at the World Youth Chess Championships in Greece and in the Common Wealth Chess Championships in India

“I am really passionate about my chess and very fortunate to have such a supportive family and school. I am determined to achieve to the very best of my ability in the years to come. I also appreciate the extreme dedication from my parents who have always been there for me and thank Crawford, the coach and Johannes Mabusela for their excellent coaching and support,” said Kasmira.
