Raising funds for needy animal shelters

“Many animal shelters in Pretoria and Centurion need help.”

“Many animal shelters in Pretoria and Centurion need help.”

This was the message from animal lover and activist Maggie Steenkamp at a fundraising event for an animal shelter held on Saturday at the NG Gemeente church at The Reeds in Centurion.

“Most of these centres are not funded. They depend on donations from initiatives like this or private individuals,” she said.

Founded a year ago, Pretoria Animal Buddies is a rescue organisation that has been helping shelters with donations and information.

“With the money raised at events like these, we buy dog food which we then deliver at the shelters,” she said.

“We also educate people how they can find new homes for the dogs, as that is important.”

Steenkamp said she did not want to open “yet another” animal shelter, as there are many centres already looking after stray and abused dogs.

“What I do is to be the ‘bridge’ between people who want to donate and the needy centres,” she said.

Steenkamp said she mostly used social media to ask for donations.

“We cannot do it alone, we need all the support we can get to help these dogs and other animals,” she said.

Steenkamp works with a group of young people such as Danyelle Fourie, who volunteers her time at the rescue organisation.

“We do this without expecting anything in return; we do it out of our own pockets,” she said.

“Ours is to educate, donate and help find new loving homes for these dogs.”

Supporting the fundraising event was Kitten Corner, which cares for cats and kittens.

Montego pet nutrition sales manager Etienne Botha donated dog food.

He said the Pretoria-based company has been donating to the rescue organisations and animal shelters around Pretoria for years now.
