Centurion’s Amazing Race now an annual institution

“We couldn’t have asked for a better start…these ladies are truly inspirational."

The first ever Mimmos Amazing Race (MAR) began in Centurion last Saturday.

Sixteen teams competed for R10 000 in prize money, just in time for Christmas.

Teams completed a series of challenges, some mental and others physical.

Gecko Printing was crowned the winner with Team Southern Implants second and Ridgebacks third.

Team Sales Assist participated in honour of Albert “Boeta Bul” Viljoen who died two weeks ago.

Albert (9) was suffering from Goodpasture syndrome.

Organiser Michelle van Zyl said: “These ladies didn’t win the race, but they had a purpose, to complete it in honour of their nephew. We couldn’t have asked for a better way to start the MAR. These ladies are truly inspirational.”

She said when the team crossed the finish line, all the other teams formed a guard of honour for them.

Team Ocean Basket and Jitterbean Coffee had enjoyed a headstart on days one and two respectively.

Van Zyl said the race was not just about the prize money but was also about giving back to the community and doing good.

She said the competitors earned a one-minute headstart for every pint of blood donated, capped at 15.

More than 80 pints of blood were donated.

“I’m happy to announce that Centurion’s own amazing race will continue. I would like to thank all the sponsors and teams for making this happen,” said Van Zyl.
