Madiba remembered at Pretoria walk
"It inspires me to see all the young people who appreciate Madiba's efforts."
Thousands gathered at the Union Buildings lawns for the Madiba walk on Sunday morning.
The statesman and struggle icon, who died in 2013, was praised for the huge legacy and big shoes he left the next generation to fill.

One of the leaders of the 1956 women’s march, Sophie De Bruin and retired human rights lawyer George Bizos told walkers to follow in Madiba’s footsteps.

“He was a man who stood for only the right thing – excellence,” said Bizos, who was one of Madiba’s closest friends.
De Bruin urged young people to emulate the late statesman.

“Leave a legacy that people are going to be proud of even when you are gone. Tat’ Mandela fought for freedom among other things and let’s remember him for that,” she said.
The 5km walk and 10km races were preceded by a wreath-laying ceremony to remember Nelson Mandela.
Local hit group Team Mosha entertained the crowd.
Nelly Mtshweni (54), one one of the race winners, said winning was his best effort at honouring “tat’ Madiba”.

“I missed the opportunity to see his body when the public was invited for a viewing, so I will use this opportunity to honour him and say thank you for walking for freedom,” he said.

Mtshweni, who has been running for over 30 years, said he was happy to see more young people participating in the remembrance event.
“It inspires me to see many young people taking their health seriously and also appreciating Madiba’s efforts,” he said.
Comedian Thapelo Seemise, popularly known as Tipps Shampoo, was master of ceremonies.
