Moneyraiser held to help sterilisation of pit bulls

The PBFSA said they have noticed shelters filling up with pit bulls at a rapid rate.

The Pit Bull Federation of South Africa (PBFSA) held a moneyraiser on Saturday, 2 December to kick-off its sterilisation campaign.

The moneyraiser themed: “Celebrating the Pit Bull” was held at Toutrek Park in Gezina.

President of the Pit Bull Federation SA, Jeanette Erasmus, said the aim of this event is raise money to enable them to sterilise 500 pit bulls in 2018.

She said the PBFSA took a decision to start this sterilisation project after it became apparent that the breed was in trouble.

“This year alone, we have been given commentary on 10 maulings of which five proved fatal, and of these three involved children,” she said.

She said on top of this they have noticed shelters filling up with pit bulls at a rapid rate.

“As an organisation we have decided to take the lead and say ‘it is now enough’,” she said.

She said the PBFSA believes that by sterilising as many dogs as possible they will be curbing the number of unwanted litters who will go on to fill the shelters.

“We will be preventing the birth of puppies from backyard breeders who then go on to fill the shelters. We will be preventing the birth of puppies who will end up suffering the most horrendous abuse at the hands of lower level dog fighters,” she said.

In order for the PBFSA to achieve its goal, Erasmus called on the pit bull loving public to please support the cause.

A great line-up of entertainment, monster trucks and potjie competitions were organised for the event.
