“The turn out was great, the girls and I went all out and approached businesses to assist us with raising funds for cancer.”

Six Mrs SA contestants planned a national jail and bail event in an effort to raise funds for cancer at the Brooklyn mall on Sunday.

The contestants told Rekord why they entered the competition.

Chantel Blignaut said she lost her mother to cancer and entered the competition to help  empower other women.

“I wanted to take a stand against cancer because it has robbed me of my own mother,” she said.

Nicole Capper said she was not a pageant girl but was inspired to enter when her daughter Tatum was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (a disorder that causes severe damage to the lungs, digestive system and other organs in the body).

“I decided that what my daughter needed the most was a brave mother. Entering was scary for me because it’s out of my comfort zone but I decided to do it to overcome my fear,” said Capper.

Esme Booysens-Burn said she had problems with losing weight after giving birth to her daughter but decided to lose weight and enter the competition.

“I was 30kg heavier than I am now. I saw the entry form when I was on my hospital bed so I decided to give it a shot because being Mrs SA is for the ordinary woman who overcomes trials,” said Booysens-Burn.

Bayanda Gumede entered the completion to explore her brand and wanted to make a difference.

“Everyone is affected by cancer so you might as well get involved,” said Gumede.

Prenita Reddi said her life had been a steep learning curve. She was married at a young age then got divorced, then remarried.

“I want to inspire all women – married women, single women and divorced women – to know that they are capable,” said Reddi.

Candice Robbertze wanted to inspire women and the youth to raise their standards and aim high, and that’s why she entered.

“I entered the competition to use it as a platform to inspire women and the youth. I have my own business, Calorie Conscious, which is a bakery where we prepare veggie wraps which we give to underprivileged women,” she said.

Robbertze said her father was a cancer survivor and the cause for cancer was close to her heart.

She said the event was a team effort and thanked Chateau Gateaux for providing cakes, Brooklyn Mall for the venue, Calorie Conscious for pizza bases and Col’Cacchio’s for donating pizza toppings.
