GALLERY: Moneyraiser held for animals under the care of the SPCA

The event was fun-filled and many prizes were up for grabs.

Community members came out in their numbers to show support and help the SPCA raise money for animals under its care.
The money raised, themed “Wag-a-Walk”, was held at Smuts House in Irene, Centurion on Saturday.

The Tshwane SPCA manager Elsa Daniels said the objective of the event was to raise money to help fight animal cruelty and to care for abandoned and neglected animals that are under the care of the SPCA.

Scores of people turned up with their dogs of different sizes and shapes to take part in the dog walk.

“The money raised from this event will be channeled towards supporting the SPCA’s inspectorate division,” added Daniels.

The event was fun-filled and many prizes were up for grabs. Those who came with their dogs had the option of walking a short route as well as a longer route.

The SPCA recently announced that over the past four months there had been an influx of animals. Most were handed over to the SPCA by their owners due to the owners relocating or the high cost of living, as some people could no longer afford to feed their pets.

“Animals are being referred to us, and we are now in need of dog food. We need dog food to take care of the animals that are in our kennels,” added Daniels.

“Our aim is the prevention of cruelty to animals and to provide a place of safety and care for all animals in distress,” said Daniels.
Registration for the walk opened at 07:00.

“There was also a raffle ticket. We had loads of spot prizes and a lucky draw on the day. People were most welcome to enjoy a hearty breakfast at the dog-friendly tea garden after their walk,” she said.

Several dog owners came with a variety of dogs and proudly walked through the landscape at Smuts House Museum.

Among the different breeds of dogs were Labradors, German shepherds, boerboels and Basset Hounds.
Dog owners enjoyed the exercise and fresh air with their animals.

“We are very pleased with the response and support we got from residents,” she said.
