Carnival charity event finalist Wimari du Plessis hosted a money-raiser for the Choc Childhood Cancer Foundation SA recently.

Du Plessis said the event was meant to raise money by selling food, drinks, art and clothing items for two NGOs.

There were more than 10 stalls selling anything from doughnuts to facial scrubs.

Volunteer Lasya Myburgh said her grandson passed away last year due to cancer and that was the reason she attended.

“I want to help where I can by raising funds for the homes that care for children that suffer from cancer,” she said.

Shirley Rust said the event helped her to do what she loved most, to help others.

“I donate from time to time to these causes. If we, business people and entrepreneurs, don’t assist those in need, we have to ask ourselves who do we expect to help?”

Rust said communities needed to come together to help those in need.

“It is not just about the money but also about caring – giving your time and volunteering. That goes a long way,” she said.

Singer Tanya Sharnick kept those attending entertained by singing some of her songs, of which some were clear favourites among the crowd who kept dancing.
