Arcadia residents preserve suburb’s heritage

The Arcadia Residents Association opened a two-day art exhibition at the Arcadia Scout Hall on Saturday to raise money for its initiatives.
Organiser Jenette Engelbrecht said a large portion of the money collected would go towards preserving the heritage of the area.
“Arcadia is one of the oldest suburbs in Pretoria and has a rich heritage,” Engelbrecht said.

She said the area had the oldest houses in the city and many tourists traversed through the suburb on their way to the Union Buildings.
The people of Arcadia knew each other and supported community events taking place throughout the year, Engelbrecht said
“As part of heritage preservation initiatives, we resist illegal land use as well as illegal businesses.”

At the exhibition, local artists and their counterparts from elsewhere in Pretoria had an opportunity to showcase their work and skills.
More than 150 guests were treated to a finger lunch and excellent wine while bidding for valuables ranging from classic furniture to artworks
on auction.
The Scout Hall was used as venue for the first time after it was upgraded by the community. The hall also features a garden and a children’s playground.
