New business district opened

Central Square Menlyn Maine officially opened on Wednesday in the east of Pretoria.

The first phase of a new multibillion rand state-of-the-art business district in the east of Pretoria was officially opened this week.

“The Central Square and entire Menlyn Maine mark a very important development,” said Gauteng premier David Makhura on Wednesday.

He was opening the R1. 6 billion Central Square shopping and dining district.

It comprises 50 000 square-metre of the entire Menlyn Maine development.

Makhura said Menlyn Main employees would live in the area – one of the unique features separating this development from other ones.

“We want people to live closer to their workplaces and do not have to travel long distances from work.”

The Menlyn Maine development would also feature a casino, hotels, offices, hospital and arena.

Architectural director Henk Boogertman said the new development had a great retail offering, but was not a shopping complex.

“It is not a shopping centre…we are creating a new central business district in Menlyn,” Boogertman said.

He said all the buildings were green-star rated from four to five-stars.

“We are also rating the precinct. This will be the first precinct in the country to receive a green rating.”

Boogertman said about half of the development was done, but it would take about five years to complete the whole project.

A casino, hospital and hotel were among of the projects still to be completed.
