Publishing house gives voice to poets

Veerpen Publishers is set to revolutionise the literary sector by giving a voice to lesser known poets.

A new publishing house, Veerpen Publishers, set to revolutionise the literary sector by giving a voice to lesser known poets, was launched in Capital Park on Saturday.

This coincided with the launch of a new book of poetry that features 11 poets and 60 poems.

Founding partners Jaco Visser and Heleen Malherbe said they were excited at the journey that lay ahead.

“Our priority is to give poets a voice in a different way,” said Malherbe.

“The poets in our stable speak to each other. They speak from the heart and portray emotion in their work.”

Visser said they chose to start by publishing a poetry book because they were passionate about poetry.

“As we grow, we will diversify and publish works of fiction, magazines, religious books and recipes.

We can assure the public that a lot more work will be published. This is only the beginning,” he said.

The new company’s website will go live on 22 October.

“For now people can reach us through our Facebook page Veerpen Uitgewers. We are going back to basics and bringing conventional poetry back.

We want to encourage people to start reading poetry in hard copy instead of from tablets and eBooks. The unknown poets are going to be heard,” said Malherbe.

Fourteen-year-old Dis Ek Anna actress Kara van der Merwe shared her new project about abuse awareness with poetry lovers.

“Sit jou voet neer is a project that is meant to create awareness about child abuse. We are saying it is time that we all took a stand against child abuse.

We are the only ones who can bring positive change to our own world,” said Van der Merwe.
