Fun filled day at 2nd annual Lente Makiti

The second annual Lente Makiti fundraiser for charity was a huge success.

Families were treated to a day of entertainment and fun at the second annual Lente Makiti at the Laerskool Wierdapark in Centurion on Saturday.

Hosted by the NG Kerk Wierdapark Suid’s Help-Net fund, the moneyraising event featured popular Afrikaans singers and actors, food stalls, a flea market, and a play area for children.

Miranda Du Plessis, a committee member of the fund, said proceeds from the event which started on Friday evening would go to the fund.

“The opening night on Friday was a success and we expect more people today. All proceeds will be used towards funding community feeding schemes and children’s shelters.”

The highlight of the event was a potjiekos competition where Binnelanders actor Ben Kruger was the head judge.

Kruger said the aim was to grow the Lente Makiti into the biggest food and wine festival in South Africa.

“Based on last year and last night’s success, we will achieve that goal. We expect between 3 000 and 4 000 people to have walked through the gates by the end of the event.”

First prize was a package which included fuel and accommodation vouchers, a game drive and breakfast for 10 people, and a stay at Forever Hotel Centurion.

Kruger said he was humbled to be part of an initiative that gave back to the community.

“The community has been so good to me by supporting me through my career. The least I could do to show my gratitude is by giving back,” said Kruger who was also the master of ceremonies on Saturday.

Other celebrities who entertained the crowd included Willem Botha, Ampie, Leah, Monique and Pieter Koen.
