Touch league off to a roaring start

15 teams compete for glory in new touch rugby league.

SA Touch, a brand-new touch rugby league hosted at the Harlequins Rugby Club in Pretoria this weekend, got off to a fantastic start.

Hosted for the first time on Sunday 26 April, 15 teams, ranging from mixed teams consisting of men, women and children, to more experienced players, participated in the event.

“We are encouraging mixed teams and all age groups to compete in this tournament,” said SA Touch organiser, Miles Abrahams.

The tournament, which will be hosted every Sunday from 12:00 to 17:00, found an untapped market and already had the backing of the South African Touch Association (SATA) and Northern Gauteng Touch Rugby Association.

“As we have different teams competing in either the 1 touch (the ball changes hands after a player is touched) or 6 down (the ball changes hands after every six touches) competitions, and we have players of different skill levels, we will structure each game so that it is fair and equal,” said Abrahams.

The tournament got off to a great start, with various sponsors already on board for the remainder of the season. Abrahams said that they now wanted to expand. “Here at Harlequins we have six fields at our disposal. That means that we can have up to 60 teams competing every Sunday.”

SA Touch will also hand out prizes on each tournament day, as well as larger prizes at the end of the season.
