Seniors enjoy the Pretoria Botanical Garden

Senior citizens from across the city braved the heat and enjoyed a casual walk through the Pretoria Botanical Garden.

Seniors from across Pretoria converged on the Pretoria Botanical Garden on a sweltering Tuesday morning for the first in a series of senior fun walks through the park.

The walks are organized by Help Seniors, a registered non-profit organisation (NPO) that aims to improve the lives of the city’s senior citizens through various programmes.

“At Help Seniors we will never allow senior citizens to lose hope, that is why we organise these projects. They are part of our Successful Aging programme, which aims to improve the lives and give new hope to senior citizens,” said Anneke Liebenberg of Help Seniors, who organized the day.

The events also give senior citizens the opportunity to socialise and make friends. “Through these events, we have actually played match-maker as well. There are three new couples who met through our events. One is even going on holiday to Egypt soon!” added Liebenberg.

Tuesday morning’s walk gave the seniors a choice of either a 1km, 2,2km or 4km route through the botanical gardens, depending on their stamina. Don and Jenny Arbuckle walked the 2,2km route and said they loved the beautiful views on their route, and stopped to take photographs next to the beautiful waterfall in the middle of the garden.

The walk was not just for seniors, however. Charlene Webster, who had flown from London to visit her father, Ron, had joined him on the walk through the picturesque garden.

The next senior walk will be on 10 March 2015, and anyone who wants more information on Help Seniors and their events can phone Anneke Liebenberg on 072-349-8395.
