National library of SA puts local poets in the spotlight

The national library of South Africa hosted a Slam poetry event on Friday to celebrate national library week.

“Poetry is something you are don’t just learn to master along the way, it is something you born with” said Professor Keorapetse, author, journalist and poet.

Kgositsile spoke at the national library of South Africa Slam poetry event held on Saturday in Pretoria central.

Young people came as far as Tembisa and Katlegong to hear the words of professor Kgositsile, and Debbie Collins, former Miss Nigeria is also a poet and a writer

According to Shade Pietersen, marketing manager at the library, Slam poetry was an initiative which they used annually as part national library week and world poetry day to promote the craft.

“Slam poetry is aimed at assisting aspiring poets with a platform to showcase their talent and to also network with established poets and writers,” said Peterson.

“We are proud as the library of South Africa to host such an important event and to provide much-needed help and support to young people who have the potential for great writers and poets.”

Nelson Ratau from Tembisa said he was grateful to the national library for the event because it helped him to master his writing skills.

“By being invited to this awesome and educational event, I am truly blessed because I gained a lot by listening to professor Kgositsile and Debbie Collins speaking about writing, which I am passionate about.”

Performers included: Avuyile Dume, Thabang Tlaka, Nelson Ratau and youth from Pretoria central.
