Robbers mistaken for guests

The identities of the four gunmen who robbed a tourist couple at a guesthouse in Arcadia on Thursday evening remains a mystery.

Four armed men who robbed two tourists on Thursday evening at a guesthouse in Arcadia, Pretoria, were initially mistaken for guests.

Sunnyside cluster police spokesperson warrant officer Dave Miller said the men were given access at the guesthouse reception as they were thought to be guests.

“A business robbery docket was opened at the Sunnyside police station and the Angolan couple are believed to have been followed from the airport,” Miller said.

Miller could not say whether the thieves had been identified by their victims.

“The men were driving a Toyota double-cab bakkie but the colour of the vehicle remains unknown at this stage.”

The owner of the guesthouse, who spoke to Rekord on condition of anonymity, said the thieves entered the guesthouse’s reception area at 18:20 and robbed the couple at gunpoint.

“They took 6000 US dollars from them including all their luggage, passports and airline tickets,” the owner said.

Sunnyside police responded within minutes, the owner said.

“I arranged alternative accommodation for the couple because they did not have anywhere to go. They are now at the Angolan embassy.”

No video footage of the robbery was taken at the guesthouse, the owner said.
