Building a bridge with Friends

Friends of the Zoo helped repair a bridge at the Pretoria Zoo.

The Friends of the Zoo helped to repair and reopen the bridge that was closed four years ago at the Pretoria Zoo on Saturday.

Chairman of Friends of the Zoo, Dirk Bester said the organisation had spent R152 000 to rebuild the bridge. Had they used a contractor, this would have set them back R1,5m to rebuild the bridge.

“Eighteen months ago, a civil engineer told us the bridge was strongly built and could carry two tons of weight in one occasion,” Bester said.

Bester said a medallion of an endangered species at the zoo was given to those who took part in the fun walk.

This was the first time, people who take part in the regular fun walks as well as those visiting the zoo could cross the bridge. The Apies river flows under it.

Henning Smit, a member of the works team for Friends of the Zoo said he was thrilled the bridge was finally repaired and that the organisation had planned to upgrade the zoo’s farmyard by purchasing more farm animals such as turkeys for the zoo.

The fun walk attracted 500 people who came and crossed over the newly built bridge.

Those who participated enjoyed a fun Saturday morning in the zoo.
