A look back to the origins of Church Square

Ever wondered what Church Square and parts of the city looked like two centuries ago?

Ever wondered what the capital city looked like in the 1800s?

Images have emerged of what Church Square and parts of Pretoria looked like before massive developments and the current A Re Yeng construction.

Shared on social media by Friedel Hansen, the images portray Pretoria’s historical lifestyle where there was limited traffic and residents got around on either a bicycle or horse-drawn carriages.

Hansen shared many images of the 1800s Church Square where the first church was built but burnt down in 1882 after being struck by lightning.

Several images included the development of the popular Church Street, which is now divided into three main roads.

One can see the less congested large dry land and the European architecture of many well-known buildings such as the Union Buildings, the City Hall and the Pretoria Hotel.

Take a look at the interesting historical photos of the capital city.
