Dignity walk for girls

Families converged at the Pretoria Botanical Gardens on Sunday to mark the International Day of the Girl child.

Hundreds of families converged at the Pretoria Botanical Gardens on Sunday to mark the International Day of the Girl child in an inaugural 5km family fun walk/run.

The run is organised by Dignity Dreams which provided reusable sanitary towels to girls across Southern Africa and beyond.

Founder, Sandra Millar said sanitary towels was not the only issue that affected girls and women.

“This is a societal problem which should be addressed by all of us. Many young girls in remote areas have no information about menstrual periods and no access to sanitary towels. In many cases they end up using rags, socks and stay away from school during that time of the month,” said Millar.

The sanitary towels provided by Dignity dreams are SABS approved for absorbency, said Millar. “Our carbon footprint is a mere 17 trees per annum and we have empowered 18 women who are now earning an income through the sanitary towels we provide,” said Millar.

Dignity dreams partnered with the Girl Rising Global Movement and Feed, Educate, Empower, Develop and Run Walk for Life, all nonprofit organisations, to raise awareness that educating girls and keeping them in school was a very powerful investment.
