DA councillor to stage protest against mayor’s sexual remarks

A DA city councillor is urging all women to join her in a protest action against the sexual harrasment she had to endure from the mayor during a political debate on the State of the Capital address.

DA councillor Bronwynn Engelbrecht has urged the city’s women to join her in a protest against “sexist” remarks by Tshwane mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa.

Engelbrecht, who is known in Waterkloof as the Bronwynnater – a reference to the will-power and endurance of the Terminator – had been ridiculed by Ramokgopa during a two hour debate on last week’s state-of-the-city address.

Ramokgopa lashed out on Engelbrecht, saying she just wanted his attention.

He said he had a wife at home who gave him attention. “She doesn’t have a husband at home to tell her she is beautiful,” he said, and followed that up with a comment about Engelbrecht’s appearance and hair colour.

“You colour your hair so often that you do not even know what your real hair colour is,” he said.

Engelbrecht said in a statement she was still choked up and dismayed. “The honourable mayor has shown total disrespect towards all women with his sexist remarks.”

The Democratic Alliance has since urged the mayor to apologise for his remarks, but he has not done so.

Rekord has asked mayoral spokesperson Blessing Manale via mail for comment, pointing out that the newspaper had deadlines to meet.

He reacted by saying he would not be threatened with deadlines. He promised to comment, but by Wednesday the mayor was still silent.
