44 undocumented people intercepted in overloaded taxi on N1

According to the TMPD, all 44 suspects were on a journey from Malawi to Johannesburg.

The Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) intercepted 34 adults and 10 children on the N1 on October 13.

The 44 undocumented foreign nationals were nabbed after the TMPD Freeway Unit was executing its normal patrols on the N1 southbound at the Hammanskraal exit.

It is reported a security officer stopped the TMPD to tell them about a minibus taxi that was allegedly overloaded in the northern region of Pretoria.

According to TMPD spokesperson Sergeant Rebone Molapo, the unit acted on the information and approached the minibus taxi.

“The members found a minibus taxi that was facing oncoming traffic with 44 occupants comprising 34 adults and 10 children.

“It was also discovered that all 44 suspects were undocumented, and on a journey from Malawi to Johannesburg,” said Molapo.

Molapo said the suspects had no luggage with them and were detained at the nearest police station where they were charged with being in the country illegally.

“The driver was charged for failing to produce driving documents and being in the country illegally.

The TMPD commits to ensuring that the residents of Tshwane are safe.”
