‘Big brother’ thwarts attempted cable theft at Koedoeberg substation

Two more suspects escaped.

A theft of cable at the Koedoeberg substation was thwarted last week when security stakeholders and a ward councillor swiftly reacted to the scene on October 10.

The Faerie Glen Operations team, comprising SAPS Garsfontein, Platinum Risk Solutions, Bull security, Brinant, Fidelity ADT, and the Community Policing Forum (CPF) rushed to the scene when suspicious activity at the substation was picked up on video footage.

According to CPF spokesperson Michael Oosthuizen, the camera installed at the substation detected the suspicious movement prompting the quick response.

Oosthuizen said Platinum Risk Solutions security officers responded and were backed up by Bull security.

He said one man was arrested and taken to Garsfontein police.

According to Platinum Risk Solutions responder manager Ajay Lottering, the suspect was arrested on Thursday at 00:00.

“He is charged with tampering with essential infrastructure,” said Lottering.

Lottering stated that two more suspects escaped.

He said the suspects were on their way to cut the cables that supply electricity to Olympus and Equestria.

“They wanted to steal electrical cables that could have led to an outage,” he stated.

“We don’t know if there was subotage behind it but luckily we worked together as a team and stopped them.”

Tshwane Spokesperson Lindela Mashigo stated that Tshwane’s Pretorius Park Electricity Depot was informed by the ward councillors about the attempted crime on Koedoeberg Substation.

He said fortunately, there is no damage to the said substation.

Mashigo added that private security companies acted swiftly before any breakage could occur.

“There is a continuous visibility of patrols by private security companies in the area,” said Mashigo.
