Police nab over 500 in weekend operations

Targeted operations led to the arrest of multiple suspects in Bronkhorstspruit and Ekangala.

Tshwane police arrested more than 570 suspects for various crimes during a series of operations this weekend.

Officers were under the leadership of district commissioner Samuel Thine and the operations were executed in collaboration with many other law enforcement agencies and community organisations.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk said operations involved patrols in crime hotspots, compliance inspections, and raids on illegal liquor outlets.

“Officers arrested 231 suspects for various offences during station operations and routine policing activities.”

He said Tshwane detectives arrested 345 suspects during Operation Shanela in Bronkhorstspruit and Ekangala.

“253 suspects were arrested for murder, attempted murder, gender-based violence, housebreaking, theft, and rape,” said Van Dyk.

He said officers patrolled the Bronkhorstspruit and Ekangala areas and executed a roadblock.

“41 liquor premises were inspected, and two were identified as non-compliant with liquor regulations,” he added.

Liquor was confiscated during the operation.

Van Dyk said 51 undocumented immigrants were also detained for deportation pending the outcome of legal proceedings. Two employers were also arrested for employing illegal immigrants.

In total, 860 individuals, 73 premises, and 479 vehicles were searched, with three cars being tested to determine if they had been stolen.

“The searches resulted in arrests of one suspect for possession of illegal ammunition and another suspect for drug possession and dealing when Nyaope was found in his possession,” said Van Dyk.

He said this operation led to the arrest of 20 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol and one for violating the Gambling Act.

Van Dyk added that 38 fines were issued, which totalled R23 500.

“Three vehicles were impounded for non-compliance with the Road Traffic Act.”
