Pretoria educators scoop up teaching awards

Teachers from different provinces were recognised for their dedication, innovation, and passion for teaching.

The Gauteng Department of Education recently celebrated exceptional educators at the National Teaching Awards ceremony.

The awards ceremony was held at Indaba Hotel and Spa in Johannesburg on October 1 and several Pretoria-based teachers scooped some awards.

Rekord caught up with a few teachers from Pretoria who were recognised for their dedication, innovation, and passion for teaching.

Out of six Pretoria teachers, Tshwarelo Geraldine Mkhabela of Laerskool Akasia, Tristan Francois du Plessis of Laerskool Kameeldrift and Anna Maria Haywood of Laerskool Pierneef Primary School received awards.

These remarkable teachers said that effective education extends beyond the classroom, shaping future leaders and empowering communities.

Du Plessis, the winner of the Excellence in Teaching Mathematics award, said it’s an incredible honour and a humbling experience to receive national recognition for doing what he loves.

He stated that this acknowledgement is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and passion that go into his teaching every day.

“It also serves as an affirmation of the impact that teachers can have on the lives of their learners and communities,” he said.

Du Plessis added that most importantly the award motivates him to continue striving for excellence and to be a positive influence in the field of education.

He believes that his commitment to creating a dynamic, inclusive, and learner-centred environment, despite limited resources sets him apart from other teachers.

“I focus on integrating social and cultural elements into my lessons to make mathematics more engaging and accessible to all learners,” he said.

He added that he continuously seeks out professional development opportunities and collaborates with colleagues to refine his teaching strategies.

Haywood, who is the recipient of the Best Primary School Teacher award, stressed the value of a growth mindset.

“I believe in fostering resilience and a love for learning, essential for success in education and life,” she explained.

Haywood said her dedication to building strong relationships with learners and her commitment to their goals have earned her recognition.

Makhabela, who received the Best Teacher award, said she drew inspiration from her mother and Jesus Christ.

She said being recognised provincially for her teaching efforts is an incredible experience.

“This recognition affirms my commitment and fuels my motivation to continue striving for excellence and expanding my knowledge,” said Makhabela.

She stated that what sets her apart from other teachers is her over-the-top energy and deep appreciation for the community she belongs to.
