Manhunt for eight Mahube Valley ATM bombers

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk says the suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash and 5 litres of oil.

Police are looking for eight suspects involved in an ATM bombing at a filling station near the Mamelodi Mall, in the early hours of October 4.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk said the incident occurred at 02:30.

Van Dyk said according to a petrol pump attendant on duty, the group arrived in a white Hilux without registration – with some sitting in the back.

He said the suspects jumped out of the vehicle. One of them shot a warning shot and then instructed the attendant to lie down on the ground.

“Another suspect instructed the attendant to fill up the containers with petrol and he told him that one of his guys had already taken his tag,” said Van Dyk.

Van Dyk said that the group tried twice to bomb the window at the pay point but failed.

He said they then resorted to breaking the door by pushing it open and then bombed the drop-off safe.

“They took [an] undisclosed amount of cash and 5 litres of oil,” said Van Dyk.

Van Dyk added that one suspect was armed with an automatic rifle.

He said the group fired shots as they fled the scene.

“The investigation continues, and all leads are being followed up.”
