Members of the Rietgat SAPS were involved in a shootout with suspects involved in drug trafficking in the early hours of Tuesday, September 3.

The incident ensured the recovery of a substantial quantity of dagga and the confiscation of two vehicles.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk said the officers acted on information from an informer.

Van Dyk said a tracking and tracing operation was launched, targeting individuals suspected of being involved in the sale and purchase of dagga.

He said the investigation led to Block NN in Soshanguve, where police identified two vehicles of interest: a white Ford Ranger and a grey Haval.

“Upon spotting the vehicles speeding through the area, the police initiated a high-speed pursuit.

“However, the suspects managed to evade capture and parked the vehicles in a street near a residence in Block NN,” said Van Dyk.

He mentioned that the officers found three male suspects and one female suspect near the parked vehicles.

“A confrontation ensued, leading to a shootout as the suspects fled into nearby bushes.

When the officers inspected the abandoned vehicles, they discovered large quantities of compressed dagga wrapped in brown tape.

“Both vehicles were seized and secured for further investigation.”

He said despite a brief return by the suspects, who fired shots at the officers from a distance, the police managed to secure the crime scene without further incident.

Van Dyk said charges of attempted murder have been laid against the suspects, who remain at large.

“The Rietgat SAPS is actively pursuing leads to trace and apprehend those involved.

“The vehicles and dagga will be held as evidence while the investigation continues.”

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the suspects must contact their local station or the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111.
