A Gauteng police operation yielded impressive results over the weekend, with over 1 000 suspects apprehended for serious crimes.

The operation, which spanned from August 30 to September 1, was spearheaded by Gauteng provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Tommy Mthombeni and involved a collaborative effort by multiple law enforcement agencies.

Police spokesperson Colonel Noxolo Kweza said the crackdown targeted high-crime areas utilising strategic roadblocks and focused raids to apprehend wanted individuals.

Kweza said among those arrested were suspects involved in murder, attempted murder, rape, business robbery, drug dealing, possession of drugs, assault, hijacking, and the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

The operation also led to the recovery of stolen vehicles and firearms in Soshanguve and Akasia.

“During the operation in the north of Pretoria, a stolen vehicle was recovered and multiple suspects were detained.”

The scale of the operation was extensive, involving a wide array of law enforcement bodies including the Department of Home Affairs, Gauteng Traffic Police, Tshwane Metropolitan Police Department (TMPD), Gauteng Traffic Wardens, CPF and private security firms.

“Their combined efforts resulted in over 800 wanted suspects being captured, with 145 arrests specifically related to crimes against women and children.

“Additional notable outcomes of the operation included the arrest of more than 20 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol, the detainment of over 60 illegal immigrants, and the closure of eight unlicensed liquor outlets due to regulatory non-compliance.”
