Police arrest trio for armed robbery and attempted murder

After a couple praying at the local stream was targeted, police are warning residents about the risks of practising their religion or collecting water from streams at isolated spots.

The Pretoria North SAPS arrested three suspects on August 28 near the R80 Mabopane Highway for armed robbery and attempted murder.

The suspects were arrested after allegedly attacking a couple.

The couple had been engaged in religious practices at a local stream in the area when they were accosted by the suspects.

Pretoria North social crime prevention co-ordinator Sergeant Tumisang Moloto said the victims were collecting water from the stream when the assailants approached them.

Residents are urged to be vigilant while conducting religious practices near the R80.

He said the armed suspects demanded the couple’s personal belongings before fleeing the scene on foot.

“Prompt action by the Pretoria North SAPS sector policing team, supported by the Tshwane K9 unit, Flying Squad, and a security company providing aerial assistance, led to the swift capture of the trio in a nearby bush.

“Authorities recovered suspected stolen property and an unlicensed firearm from the suspects.”

Moloto commended the dedicated efforts of the team in bringing the perpetrators to justice.

However, he also issued a stern warning to the local community regarding the risks associated with performing religious activities or collecting water in isolated areas.

Moloto advised residents to exercise caution and reconsider engaging in such activities near secluded spots, such as rivers and streams, as they can present significant safety hazards.

“The recent incident underscores the potential dangers faced by individuals in these settings and highlights the importance of remaining vigilant.

“The safety of our community is paramount and while we respect the right to practise one’s faith, we urge everyone to choose safer locations and remain aware of their surroundings to avoid putting their lives in jeopardy.”

As the trio awaits their court appearance at the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court, local authorities continue to emphasise the need for vigilance and caution in everyday activities.

Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious behaviour to the police and to take proactive measures to ensure their personal safety.
