Police arrest scores in north operation

Multiple arrests were made for different crimes during the operation in Pretoria North and Hercules.

Police arrested over 300 suspects in Tshwane for different crimes during Operation Shanela in Pretoria North and Hercules on August 22.

Spokesperson Johan van Dyk said the operation commenced early on Thursday morning with a parade, where objectives and outcomes were outlined to the participating agencies.

“Departments such as Home Affairs, Gauteng Traffic, and local law enforcement, including the Tshwane Metro Police and CPFs were involved. Officers from various SAPS stations also took part.”

Van Dyk said the operation comprised patrols in identified high-crime areas, inspections of various liquor outlets and secondhand dealers, and the search of identified premises.

“Tshwane detectives arrested 293 suspects, including individuals involved in serious crimes: 83 for gender-based violence, 4 for murder, 2 for attempted murder, 4 for armed robbery and 5 for rape.”

He said 63 undocumented immigrants were arrested and will be deported after all the legal processes are finalised. Two people were fined a total of R27 500 for employing illegal immigrants.

“With this operation, 1 528 people and 803 vehicles were searched.”

Three suspects were arrested for possession and dealing drugs when 71 sachets of drugs were found in their possession.

Van Dyk said 151 traffic violation notices were issued, amounting to R64 280 in fines while two vehicles were discontinued for noncompliance with the Road Traffic Act.
