Voluntary non-profit continues to fight crime in the east

The organisation came into existence when two residents were shot in 2023.

Alpha Security Forum (ASF), a voluntary, non-profit community-based independent crime-fighting organisation, aims to expand its impact by involving more community members in the war against crime.

This organisation was formed in October 2023 to enhance safety and security through proactive crime prevention, respond effectively to incidents and foster a secure environment through community engagements and strategic initiatives.

ASF started to be active in Lynnwood Ridge, then included Murrayfield, The Willows, Lynnwood Manor, and Lynn De Grace under Garsfontein Sector 1.

Ayris Ruyter, a crime responder from ASF, said: “We don’t have borders and we respond to incidents where we are needed”.

Ruyter said the organisation aims to foster a safe, inclusive society, where residents can take pride in their community and feel secure.

“This goal is universal, transcending race, religion, and creed, and aims to create a safer environment where individuals can sleep soundly and contribute positively to society.”

The group strives to be a shining example of what can be achieved through collective action against injustice, ensuring the community remains vigilant and cohesive in the fight against crime and disorder.

The organisation also helps out in the community in terms of cleaning and beautifying projects.

Ruyter said ASF was formed out of necessity due to rising crime and a lack of effective police resources in the area.

“The shooting of two residents prompted an intensive approach to intelligence gathering and mapping crime ingress points. This effort, combined with a desire to rebuild community bonds and enhance neighbourhood safety, led to the formation of a cohesive security initiative.”

He said ASF relies on active community participation, both financially and through volunteer efforts.

“Community members contribute funds essential for running patrols, maintaining security infrastructure, and supporting police engagement.”

Ruyter said the group works closely with the police, adhering to legal norms and participating in community policing forums to provide a direct voice for residents.

“This collaboration ensures that community concerns are effectively communicated and addressed by law enforcement.”

He said like any other organisation, financial constraints are the biggest challenge.

“As the Alpha Security Forum operates as a non-profit entity dependent on community donations, to address this, the group has successfully leveraged support from local businesses and community members who contribute both funds and equipment. Additionally, members have negotiated sponsorships and formed strategic partnerships to enhance resources and capabilities.”

Ruyter said Alpha Security Forum has established strong relationships with various security companies and community forums.

“Key partnerships include those with Lakes Security Forum, Old East Safety Forum, Silverton police and the Equestria Cohort.”

The collaborations facilitate shared operations, intelligence exchange, and joint efforts to address crime across different areas.

Ruyter said the group’s approach to building relationships and working across borders highlights its commitment to a collective fight against crime, hand in hand with the police and shoulder to shoulder with security companies.
He added that it’s time the community stands together with all against crime.

To achieve its objectives, ASF employs a multifaceted strategy:

Patrolling and surveillance: Regular patrolling by both community volunteers and security companies, supported by the use of technology such as floodlights, security cameras, and number plate recognition software.

Collaboration: Sharing and gathering intelligence through partnerships with other security companies and forums, such as Lakes Security Forum and the Equestria Cohort.

Community involvement: Engaging residents through educational outreach, social media platforms, and local events to encourage vigilance and community cohesion.

Technology and Data Analysis: Utilising data to predict crime trends and improve response strategies.
