Pretoria east learner (10) leaps to gymnastic heights

The young talented Kylie Leung will be trading her leotard for high fashion as she participates in Japan Kids Fashion Week this August.

Ten-year-old Kylie Leung from a Pretoria east school recently tumbled through a series of gymnastic competitions, showcasing her exceptional talent.

Leung, who attends Courtney House International School, a Curro Select School in the east of Pretoria, competed in the Gymagic Invitational Competition in July in Kempton Park where she vaulted her way to athletic stardom.

She secured second place on vault and beam and first place on bar, floor and overall.

In the last week of July, the acrobatic dynamo nailed her routine at the Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Gauteng North Qualification Competition held on Friday, July 26 at Matsport Centre in Centurion.

Her achievements qualified her for the Gauteng Competition in August, although Leung will be trading her leotard for high fashion as she participates in Japan Kids Fashion Week on the same day.

Despite the scheduling conflicts, the youngster remains committed to her daily gymnastics training and aims to compete in next year’s Gym Games in Cape Town.

“I felt I did not do my best at the Gauteng North Competition, so I was shocked and thrilled to be placed first overall. Even though my dream is to become a paediatrician, gymnastics is my passion, and my ambition is to compete in the Youth Olympics and the Olympics one day,” she said.

Her recent gymnastics achievements will certainly give her the experience to perform best under pressure.

Dimitra Bailanis, executive head at Courtney House expressed her pride for the exploits of the young talented Leung.

“Kylie exemplifies the spirit of Courtney House with her dedication, talent and ambition. We are proud of her gymnastics, modelling and academic triumphs. Her achievement is a testament to the overall excellence fostered at our school and I am confident this is only the start of a remarkable journey for her, both in and out of the classroom.”
