Emergency services contain two fires in Pretoria on Saturday

Firefighters urged residents to exercise caution when making fires as veld fires threatened homes.

Local emergency services responded to two veld fires threatening property in the city on Saturday.

No injuries were reported following a large fire at Hillside Golf Course in Pretoria North on Saturday night.

The Sinoville Fire Fighters Association (SFFA) said the organisation was first on the scene at around 19:30 on Saturday night.

“We received a message that assistance was needed at Hillside Golf Course. Our volunteer firefighters were on their way back from another incident and immediately responded.”

The volunteer organisation reported that there were no injuries, but the fire came near buildings at the golf estate.

“The flames reached the boundary walls of the houses and burnt parts of the golf course,” SFFA said in a Facebook post.

Together with the Tshwane Fire Department, firefighters battled the blaze until the early hours of the morning.

The scene was cleared by the morning, but the association urged residents to be cautious when making fires.

Tshwane emergency services spokesperson Lindsay Mnguni confirmed that there were no injuries.

In another incident, Mnguni said that Tshwane firefighters also attended a veld fire in Thaba Tshwane at about 14:30 on Saturday.

This fire was a reignition of a fire the night before that had threatened two dog rescue organisations in the area.

Pretoria Dog Rescue (PDR) CEO Celia van Zyl said that the fire came close to large trees on the PDR grounds, but that a swift response by volunteers from LytCom, KROC CPF, and Tshwane firefighters had managed to bring the fire under control.
