Nationwide Capitec outage – Here is what we know

Capitec experienced a nationwide outage that disrupted all its customer-facing services. Here is what we know.

Pretoria residents should take note that Capitec suffered a major nationwide outage, crippling all its customer-facing services.

Hundreds of customers on X/Twitter complained about declined transactions, ATM services not working, and the mobile banking app inaccessible.

Capitec posted on X, saying they are resolving the matter as soon as possible.

“Due to an unexpected issue with an international service provider, we are currently experiencing nationwide service disruptions. Note: Card payments & Capitec ATMs are working & your account remains secure. We apologise for the inconvenience.

The hashtag #captiec was also trending on X as frustrated customers shared their experiences.

Outage tracking website Downdetector showed a big surge in reports of issues with Capitec’s services from around 07:00.

The bank also sent an SMS to some customers, informing them it was aware of the issues.

Meanwhile, according to a report by MyBroadband, Windows users around the world are reporting that their computers are showing the operating system’s Blue Screen of Death, with no apparent reason or way to prevent going into the error loop.

The issue has affected airports, television news stations, financial institutions, emergency services and many other industries and companies globally — including the London Stock Exchange.

The Johannesburg Stock Exchange issued a notice on Friday morning notifying clients that the FTSE indices are not updating.
