Tshwane district commissioner Brigadier Samuel Thine traced and arrested two suspects after receiving reports during a visit to an informal settlement in Bronkhorstspruit.

Thine led an operation on Thursday, July 18 and police arrested 351 suspects for different crimes in Bronkhorstspruit and Ekangala.

The operation was conducted in the early hours of the morning with various agencies, including Home Affairs, the labour department, the Gauteng traffic department, metro police, and CPFs from respective stations.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk the operation included patrols at crime hotspots, compliance inspections, and raids on illegal liquor outlets.

“Detectives arrested 295 suspects, including those involved in serious crimes,” he said.

He said among them, 70 were arrested for gender-based violence, two for murder, six for attempted murder, one for armed robbery, and seven for rape,” he said.

He added that three tactical teams were deployed to patrol the crime hotspots in the two policing areas.

Van Dyk said after the teams inspected 59 premises and 14 alcohol establishments, they identified four as non-compliant with liquor regulations so their alcohol was confiscated.

“One suspect was arrested for drug possession when 3 000 illicit cigarettes were found in his possession,” he said.

He said 40 people were arrested for being in the country illegally and will be deported pending the outcome of legal proceedings.

In total, 584 individuals and 239 vehicles were searched, and three firearms were checked for legal registration, resulting in the arrest of two individuals for possession of suspected drugs.

“Thine and district senior members visited a gender-based violence victim whose house was burned by her boyfriend. They assisted by painting and repairing the house,” said Van Dyk.

Thine held a street imbizo with the residents during his visit to an informal settlement in Bronkhorstspruit.

Van Dyk said police received reports while interacting with the residents about suspects involved in criminal activities.

“Thine personally traced the suspects, leading to the identification and arrest of two suspects,” he said.

Van Dyk said several items, including a quad bike, generator, heavy-duty spanners, and a borehole pump, were found in their house.

He said the suspects were arrested and charged with possession of stolen property.

“Investigations are underway to determine if the suspects could be linked to other crimes,” he said.
