Mass neighbourhood watch patrol strengthens community vigilance

The regular patrolling routine is designed to be a consistent deterrent against crime and to create a safer environment for all residents.

The AfriForum Apies River Neighbourhood Watch undertook a mass patrol earlier this month, reinforcing its commitment to community safety.

This comes after residents of Pretoria North were urged to avoid the bridge over the river, as several muggings and robberies were reported.

The extensive operation by the neighbourhood watch involved 30 dedicated community members who collectively invested over 93 hours patrolling the area, covering a total distance of 395km.

AfriForum District Coordinator for Greater Pretoria North, Sampie Steinberg, said the neighbourhood watch effort spanned the neighbourhoods of Vastfontein, Grootvlei-East and Kromdraai, ensuring a visible presence to deter criminal activities.

Steinberg emphasised the importance of such visible patrols.

“It is of cardinal importance for AfriForum to conduct visibility patrols to enhance the community’s safety and curb criminal activities,” he said.

Steinberg highlighted that the patrollers adhered strictly to all required regulations and operated within the legal framework.

“The patrol concluded without any incidents, showcasing the effectiveness and discipline of the community members involved.”

To facilitate seamless communication during the patrol, the AfriForum branch made necessary adjustments to the radios used by patrollers.

“These adjustments are part of an annual maintenance routine to ensure all members can communicate effectively during their operations.”

He said technological support is crucial for the coordination and success of extensive patrols.

“The mass patrol is not an isolated event, but part of a monthly initiative by AfriForum’s Apies River Neighbourhood Watch.”

Steinberg said the regular patrolling routine is meant to be a consistent deterrent against crime and to create a safer environment for all residents.

“By maintaining a visible presence and being proactive, the neighbourhood watch aims to significantly reduce the incidence of crime in their community.”

Steinberg also extended an invitation to the community to join their efforts.

“AfriForum’s Apies River Neighborhood Watch calls on the community to get involved and prioritise their safety.

“Community involvement is a cornerstone of the neighbourhood watch’s strategy, and their inclusive approach has been instrumental in their ongoing success,” said Steinberg.
