The Tshwane metro has initiated critical streetlight repairs in Pretoria North to address crime concerns around the Apies River Bridge on the R101 near the M1 intersection with Paul Kruger Street.

The metro streetlight maintenance team began repair work on July 5, successfully restoring several streetlights towards the north.

Metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said the metro acknowledged that acts of vandalism led to the dysfunction of streetlights, which in turn has contributed to a surge in criminal activities.

“These efforts are part of a broader maintenance plan for the 2024/25 financial year, which includes additional repairs along Paul Kruger Street,” said Mashigo.

Mashigo said the maintenance team in Region 2 is also set to investigate and address potential malfunctions of streetlights on the eastern side of the Apies River, particularly by the Wonderboom Junction entrance on Lavender Road.

These repairs come in response to increasing concerns from residents and authorities regarding safety in the area.

The Pretoria North Sector 1 CPF deputy chairperson Willem Nel urged residents to avoid walking near the bridge, especially in the early morning and late at night.

Nel said 11 people were robbed at the bridge in June alone.

“The criminals primarily target pedestrians to and from work during early morning and late evening hours when it’s dark.

The bridge has also seen a rise in smash-and-grab robberies,” said Nel.

Nel stressed the importance of vigilance and urged residents to report any suspicious activity to police immediately.

“We want to end crime in this area and we can do that by having a good relationship with residents who want to see a crime-free Pretoria North,” he said.

“The metro’s efforts to repair and maintain streetlights are a crucial step towards improving safety in the area, providing much-needed relief to residents and pedestrians.”
