Police arrest 502 people in Pretoria for various crimes

Police said a total of 502 people were recently arrested in Pretoria for various crimes committed in the city.

According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk, the arrests were made during several operations, including patrols in crime-prone areas, inspections for compliance, and crackdowns on illegal alcohol sales.

“With unwavering commitment and dedication, the streets of Tshwane was echoing the footsteps of Police Officers led by Brigadier Samuel Thine, the Acting District Commissioner of Tshwane, with a multidisciplinary operational team.

“Thanks to their efforts and cooperation with various agencies and community groups, 502 suspects were arrested for different crimes.”v

He said these operations involved teamwork with departments like Home Affairs, Gauteng Traffic, local law enforcement such as Tshwane Metro Police Department and Community Policing Forums. Officers from different SAPS stations also played crucial roles.

“By the end of the weekend, 237 individuals were arrested for offenses like assault, housebreaking, public drinking, driving under the influence, and armed robbery with normal police actions at Police stations across Tshwane.”

Van Dyk added that in the Mabopane area, Operation Shanela was executed and highly effective.

“Tshwane Detective teams nabbed 226 suspects, including those involved in serious crimes such as 2 for attempted murder, 2 for armed robbery, 41 for assault and 75 for Gender-based violence.”

Three tactical groups of officers were deployed to patrol the streets of Mabopane, leading to the inspection of twelve liquor premises and the closing of six liquor premises, which confiscated 246 500 ml of illicit liquor as they were not complying with liquor regulations.

Additionally, 17 undocumented immigrants were detained for deportation with 3 persons arrested for employing illegal immigrants.

He said five people were arrested and fined for drinking in public.

“During the operation, 2020 individuals and 730 vehicles were searched, with eight premises also being searched, resulting in arrests of 24 persons for drunk driving.

“One suspect for car high jacking on a Mabopane case that was registered earlier in the month and one suspect for drug possession and dealing when 15 ziplock bags containing drugs were found in his possession.”

Van Dyk added that 45 Aarto fines were issued totaling R24 200.
