Metro releases Ward Committee qualifiers

With the nomination process being completed on May 3, the elections are scheduled to take place during the last two weekends of July.

The office of Tshwane Speaker recently published the names of the residents who have qualified to participate in the Ward Committee elections this July.

With the nomination process being completed on May 3, the elections are scheduled to take place during the last two weekends of July.

Ward committees promote community participation, inform the municipality of the needs of residents and are responsible for keeping residents informed about municipal activities.

The nomination process involved data consolidation and an information-checking process to ensure compliance with the submission requirements.

All applicants had to abide by the established criteria set forth by the Office of the Speaker and the Independent Electoral Management Body (IEMB).

Some of the minimum requirements for nominees include:

– Being registered as a voter on the voter’s roll.

– Demonstrating a vested interest in the affairs of the ward in which they live.

– Must not be a municipal official

– Must not have a commercial interest in providing goods or services to the City

– Must not have debt outstanding to the City for more than three months unless they have entered into an arrangement to settle the debt and adhere thereto, have lodged a dispute in terms of Section 102 of the Local Government: Municipal Systems Act, 2000 (Act 32 of 2000) and such dispute is pending.

– Must complete and sign the declaration, marked Annexure 2 in the Ward Committee By-law.

– Must comply with the applicable law, including but not limited to tax statutes or court orders.

“The lists published only include the names of nominees who qualify to partake in the election. Where six or more nominees contest in a ward, as Section 3(1)(b) of the Ward Committee By-law states that the composition of the ward committees requires no more than 10 members or, where applicable, no less than six members,” said spokesperson for the Office of the Speaker, Vanessa de Sousa.

The deadline for appeals and objections was by the close of business on June 29.

On July 3, the Speaker of Council, Mncedi Ndzwanana, will publish the list of eligible nominees.
