Fresh meat and livestock come to Mamelodi

'Oliver’s Livestock could not understand why Mamelodi residents drive 40 to 50km out of Mamelodi to buy livestock and get transport, where we can bring the livestock to their door step.'

Those looking for fresh meat and livestock in Mamelodi now need to look no further than the newly opened Oliver’s Livestock in the township.

Business partners Tshepo Mahlangu and Ian van Heerden of Oliver’s Livestock took it upon themselves to help residents save money by bringing farming and fresh meat to the people of Mamelodi by launching a livestock butchery and restaurant in the township on Saturday, May 4.

Oliver’s Livestock is situated on Marishane Street, Extension 5.

The launch saw residents of the township and surrounding areas, local businesses and the Mamelodi Amalgamated Taxi Association come out in their numbers to buy fresh meat and livestock.

The butchery also offers a restaurant which sells beef, lamb and wholesale meat products.

Van Heerden said the idea of bringing Oliver’s Livestock into the heart of Mamelodi came after they discovered that residents had to drive as far as 50km to buy livestock.

Residents needed transport for the livestock or to get fresh meat for their weddings, funerals, and so on.

“We could not understand why they needed to go all the way out to buy livestock and get transport where we can bring the livestock to their doorstep,” said Van Heerden.

He said after seeing the prices they paid after driving that far, what they were charged for livestock was a complete rip-off.

“We at Oliver’s Livestock want to make sure we look after the community of Mamelodi by getting them the livestock at cost plus 5% that is accessible to everyone.”

Mahlangu said: “Oliver’s Livestock approached us and told us about a good business deal that the community would benefit from and wanted a partnership with business people in Mamelodi ”.

He said the idea of the business was to save money, cut costs, and bring fresh, clean, healthy livestock where the public can buy and choose what they want at an affordable price.

“We grew up having an idea of livestock in our township, but it was not easy to bring it here,” Mahlangu said.

He said residents of Mamelodi were happy, and that their partnership with the business would go far.

The partnership has brought security, cleaning, cooking jobs and so on to the area.

“We are happy to work together with Oliver’s Livestock, and there will be more opportunities for the people of Mamelodi,” he said.

“Oliver’s Livestock will have community upliftment projects in the coming weeks, and we are also going to teach the community cattle farming, as well as give back by hosting sports days.”

The project will focus on cattle farming, ranching, significantly broadening the culture of cattle farming, and is looking forward to branching out into dairy farming, beef farming, dual farming and ranching.

“This partnership is strong, and no one will break it, and we are here for the community of Mamelodi,” said Mahlangu.

“We also want to build a good partnership with local business people here in Mamelodi, and we want to see Mamelodi people and other butchers here getting the best, quality, clean, cheap, fresh meat on their doorsteps every day.”

The business is also planning to supply all the butchers and chisa nyamas in Mamelodi and surrounding areas with A-grade meat at an affordable price.

“Oliver’s Livestock will be the soul of Mamelodi, and we want to feed the children of Mamelodi by making sure each and every household [gets] meat at an affordable price,” said Mahlangu.

The business is open seven days a week from 07:00 to 17:00.
