South African weather services warn of possible disruptive rain in Tshwane

Tshwane residents can expect a maximum temperature of 21 °C from a minimum of 16 °C, with 80 % rain probability with rain forecast to reach 15 mm.

The South African Weather Service (Saws) has issued a Level Two Yellow Warning for disruptive rain in parts of the country including Tshwane.

According to Saws an intense low-pressure system, known as a cut-off low, is forecast to bring widespread showers and thundershowers to many parts of the country.

“These weather systems can also bring damaging winds, severe thunderstorms, and even snow, depending on the season in which they develop.”

According to the weather service, the warning is valid from Sunday, April 7 from 13:00 until 23:00.

“A well-defined upper air system situated South-West of the country which will therefore send perturbations over the eastern parts of the country resulting in scattered to widespread showers and thundershowers in places over the Limpopo, Gauteng, and Mpumalanga provinces.”

Saws said the predicted disruptive rain can bring severe damage such as localised flooding of susceptible formal and informal settlements and roads, low-lying areas, and bridges are expected over Gauteng, the Lowveld area, and the escarpment of Limpopo as well as vast areas of Mpumalanga.

Tshwane residents can expect a maximum temperature of 17 °C from a minimum of 16 °C, with 80 % rain probability with a rain amount of 15 mm.

Saws will provide regular updates to the public and disaster management on expected weather conditions and potential Impact-Based warnings.

According to a Saws spokesperson, “It is strongly advised that the public take necessary precautions during this weekend and early next week.”

Possible impacts of the expected disruptive rain include:
-Flooding of low-lying roads, bridges, and flash floods or swollen streams.
-Closure of low-lying roads and dirt roads.
-Poor driving conditions due to pooling of water on roads
-Reduced visibility

Saws will continue monitoring any further developments relating to this weather system and will issue subsequent updates as required.
