Two truck hijackers caught red-handed on R21

Two alleged truck hijackers were caught red-handed on the R21 in Pretoria on Tuesday. Here is more information.

Police said two alleged truck hijackers were caught red-handed on the R21 on Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller said the arrests came after information was received that a hijacked truck was on the R21 freeway.

He said police and security resources were immediately dispatched to the area.

“One of the security service members was able to get eyes on the truck and relayed its location to the other team members.

“The suspects were seen taking the Nelmuiphius off-ramp; however, multiple units were waiting at the escape route.

“When the suspects saw the magnitude of the force waiting for them, they stopped the truck and tried to flee into the bushes.”

Miller said this proved futile as the highly trained members executed an integrated tactical takedown, thus securing the arrest of both men.

All the stolen stock and the truck were recovered.

“Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the suspects were also using a jamming device to block the tracking unit.”

Miller furthermore said the men will face charges relating to truck jacking, possession of suspected stolen property, and possession of a frequency jamming device.

Brigadier Michelle Toohey, the station commander of Lyttelton SAPS, has welcomed the effort her crime-fighting team and partners put into arresting the suspects.

Toohey further stated that this success also comes on the back of many hours and resources placed on the R21 to prevent the escalating hijacking from happening on the freeway.

The units involved in the successful arrests include Lyttelton SAPS, SAPS K9, GTP Airwing, TMPD, Axon, Noordvaal, Monitor Net, Seek, Fidelity ADT and Rentrack.
