Metro brings healthcare to homes

The metro is conducting a health outreach by visiting sick, frail and elderly patients.

Tshwane MMC of Health Rina Marx visited an old age home in Muckleneuk as part of a health outreach on March 4.

According to Marx the motive of the visit to Magnolia Haven Dienssentrum was to conduct a screening for blood sugar and blood pressure of the elderly patients.

“To support the elderly, all Tshwane metro primary healthcare clinics prioritise the very sick, frail and elderly patients,” said Marx.

Marx also said there is the Dablapmeds programme, previously known as the central chronic medicines dispensing and distribution (CCMDD) programme.

It is a free and convenient service that allows a stable person to collect their chronic medication at convenient collection points, including private pharmacies.

“Collection points are discussed by healthcare staff at clinics and agreed upon based on the patient’s preference,” said Marx.

The residents were also alerted about the risks related to hypertension, sharing medication, abuse of sedatives and other chronic illnesses.

Marx said that the elderly patients were made aware of the significance of regular medical checkups to maintain good health.

“I was assisted by nursing staff from the metro health promotion team and Diabetes South Africa,” said Marx.

Marx added that she was motivated by the results and enthusiasm of the residents to undergo the first level of screening.

She also urges the managers of homes catering to the elderly to ensure that health services are brought closer to residents.
